Israel Action Committee

The Suburban Orthodox Israel Action committee is empowered to create Israel-based activities and to promote understanding of the current situations in Israel. We undertake our mission by issuing a weekly 10-page newsletter called "Focus on Israel" that reprints articles written about Israel as well as issuing a listing of community Israel-based events. To subscribe by e-mail, contact sheldonb@rsfchart.com. We have sponsored successful and informative missions to Israel.

On Shabbat Shuva 2000, the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, a mob of Arabs ransacked Joseph's Tomb, and then burnt it down. Thirty-seven-year old Rabbi Hillel Lieberman HY"D from Elon Moreh arrived at Sabbath prayer services that morning. Upon hearing of the desecration of Joseph's Tomb, he left the synagogue and headed towards the destroyed tomb in a heroic attempt to save Torah scrolls and other holy objects from defilement. The Arabs murdered Rabbi Lieberman and left his bullet ridden body in a cave. Hillel Lieberman is survived by his wife and seven children. Suburban Orthodox Congregation has adopted and befriended the Lieberman family. See more about our family and how you can help.

The Israel Action Committee continues to raise funds for Israel security needs in Efrat through our contact with the city's chief rabbi, Rabbi Shlomo Riskin. We have also raised funds and awareness of our sister city, Elon Moreh, in the Shomron. Throughout the programming year, we bring in speakers from and about Israel, and offer opportunities for our members to speak about their experiences upon returning from their trips to Israel.
